Ardsley Football Ready To Start 2012 Season

ARDSLEY, N.Y. – Ardsley High School football team captain Eric Diamond has led his team through practices for months.

Now that the team is just days away from its season opener, Diamond cannot wait to see what those practices will yield.

“We’re really working hard. We’re trying to get in an up pace tempo, really go fast,” Diamond said. “I’m really happy with what we've got so far.”

Ardsley opens its season against Kennedy Catholic at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Colin Maier is in his seventh year as the Panthers' head coach. The team returns a bevy of upperclassmen this season that hope to provide valuable experience on and off the field.

Their quickness and strength should help, too.

“We feel like we’re pretty athletics,” Maier said. “Team speed will be an asset.”

Diamond, a senior who plays right guard, echoed his coach’s words.

“(Our strength is) definitely the amount of athletes we have,” Diamond said. “In the backfield, definitely.”

As for weaknesses, Maier said his players must continue to work to get “on the same page.”

“I think we’re pretty close,” Maier said. “The new guys who were not regular players last year just working at varsity speed.”

Ardsley took part in a six-team scrimmage Saturday at Valhalla High School and also played in one Thursday at Hastings. Maier hoped the variety of teams at Saturday’s event would provide a boost for his team.

“We don’t see them (some of the teams at the scrimmage), and that’s good,” Maier said. “Their styles will be similar to things we’ll face so it can certainly be helpful for our season coming forward.”
