Ardsley Volleyball has Strength in Numbers

ARDSLEY, N.Y. -- Ardsley faced a difficult question once the varsity volleyball team was selected. Would it have difficulty coming together with 15 players on the team? Following a four-way scrimmage, Friday, hosted by the Panthers, co-captain Nicole Galletta came away with a good feeling.

“We’ve been working hard to blend it together and become a cohesive unit,” said Galletta, a three-year starter. “We have a lot of younger girls who have come up from JV and we feel we’ve come together.” Ardsley played three games against Harrison, and two apiece with Mahopac and Pelham, going 4-3. This was Ardsley’s second scrimmage of the week, which has been beneficial with the large number of varsity players.

“We’ve been working on our versatility and different things on offense,” Galletta said. “Our passing was a lot more accurate today and we were not allowing teams to get long service runs on us. We have the skill to improve, which we have done. Now we have to work on continuity. These scrimmages have been good because they have shown us what our strengths are and what we need to work on.”

Ardsley, which lost to Pelham in the 2010 Section 1 Class A semifinals, returns nine seniors. The group consists of Ariana Bulgarelli, Laura Fraietta, co-captain Sara Li, Alexa Ozemba, Hannah Siegel, Hannah Smith, Simone Webb, Rachel Weinstein and Galletta. Galletta said the team has been putting in the extra time in areas other than volleyball.

“We’ve been doing a lot of weight training and running sprints to improve our strength and speed,” Galletta said. “Hopefully, we want to go further then we did last year.”
