The Ardsley senior and three-time Section 1 Division II recently made a verbal commitment to attend Lehigh University next fall and continue wrestling.
Longo, who placed second and fifth in the New York State Wrestling Championships in 2010 and ’11, respectively, also considered Bucknell and the University of Maryland.
“I had five unofficial visits to Lehigh and received a letter from Coach [Pat] Santoro last year showing interest in me,” Longo said. “This showed me that he is on top of the recruiting process. Lehigh’s coaching staff is excellent and they are going to make me a top wrestler.”
When Longo went on his official visit, it reinforced his conviction that Lehigh was the perfect combination of academics and athletics.
“One day, wrestling is going to end and I want to have a good education that will support my future,” said Longo, who plans a pre-law major. “When I was on my official visit, I met with the team. They told me about the competition in the room and how the coaches were unbelievable. It was a great atmosphere. I also like that Lehigh is only two hours away from home.”
Now that Longo has made his college decision, he said he can continue to focus on schoolwork and his wrestling goals in his final season.
“I am really psyched to wrestle at the Division I level, but, at the same time, I still have goals to accomplish before college,” Longo said.
