HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. The Hastings defense did its job holding the high-scoring visiting Woodlands offense down for a time, but the visiting Falcons had enough inside scoring to lift them over the Yellow Jackets 63-51 Friday.
The Yellow Jackets (6-6) stayed close early and trailed 18-16 after one quarter until the Falcons opened the second quarter with a 13-0 run and took a 33-22 halftime lead. The teams played even in the second half and the Falcons came away with a 12-point victory.
Joe Tino scored eight of his team-high 15 points in the first quarter for the Yellow Jackets. Dillon Healy added seven points for the home team.
Woodlands big man Fred Bowers made his home under the basket where he scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Falcons.
While Hastings concentrated on slowing down the Falcons, the Woodlands defense did its job handling the Yellow Jackets.
We play good defense most games, Falcons guard Justin Smith said. We wanted to get the ball down low (to Bowers) and there were a lot of fouls. We didnt make as many free throws as we should have, but we made them at the end of the game.
Woodlands guard Reece Williams scored nine first-half points to lead the early push but was in foul trouble early and finished with 15, including three free throws that helped the Falcons keep their lead late in the game.
