Dobbs Ferry Boys' Lacrosse Set for Winning Season

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- Last season was the first season of boys’ varsity lacrosse at Dobbs Ferry High School and the fledgling Eagles program already has set standards for itself after going 15-4 last year.

“We have a very strong group of athletes who love being out on the practice field,” second-year coach Greg Lewis said. “It’s our second year, but we think we can compete with any team on our level.”

The Eagles began the 2012 spring campaign with an impressive 16-5 victory against upstate Monroe-Woodbury Friday after supporting the girls’ team in its opening-day victory versus Eastchester Thursday.

“We came out to give the girls a good fan base,” Lewis said as he watched the girls’ game with his team. “We have a lot of energy. The guys have all played football and other sports together so they are close. If we can stay healthy, we can be very good.”

Lewis, who played lacrosse at Somers High School and college ball at Manhattan College, relies on a group of Dobbs Ferry football players who were members of the Eagles Class C state championship team in the fall. Quarterback Spencer Avalos, backup quarterback Grant Giglio, lineman Muhammad Hashami and linebackers John Yozzo-Scaperrotta and Darien Bica join Matt Latainer and Danny Foresti as returning starters.

Giglio and Avalos each scored three goals and had three assists in the opening-day win, Yozzo-Scapperotta had two goals and two assists, and Hashami, the Eagles goalie, had nine saves.

“Overall, we looked very good, and we had a good opportunity to get our younger guys in and they stepped up, too,” Lewis said.
