Dobbs Ferry High School Celebrates Homecoming Day

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y — Cheerleaders, fans and family lined Devoe Street entering Gould Park on Saturday to welcome the police-escorted hometown football team as hundreds of alumni gathered to celebrate Dobbs Ferry High School Homecoming Day and Senior Day.

"The Touchdown Club does as much as we can to make this a great day," club Vice President Edie Vano-Wren said as she sat at the Gould Park entry. "Homecoming is a wonderful time for everyone, including the former players like me (Class of 1954)."

Senior cheerleaders and football players were honored in pre-game ceremonies as parents escorted the seniors to midfield for presentation of flowers.

This year's homecoming featured the 50th reunion of the Class of 1962 and a special presentation of a $3,600 grant from Stop & Shop for the purchase of football concussion helmets for the Eagles players.

Touchdown Club President Miriam Soave, Secretary Rina Kennedy and Treasurer Karen Kneth were on the front line of organizing the event. The football support club sponsors Friday night lights for the field during the season, prepares and sells food, holds raffles and sells apparel to fund the program.

"The Touchdown Club does it all," Dobbs Ferry Athletic Director Jim Lindsay said. "Homecoming couldn't be what it is without them. And having the Class of 1962 back is special. This is a small village and we're all very close."

Dobbs Ferry game announcer Scotty Shevlin did the game introductions and play by play for the 32nd year.

"I know the families and have seen fathers and sons play for many years," Shevlin said. "It's always a big day."
