DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Dobbs Ferry will open the defense of its Section 1 and New York State Class C football championships Saturday at home against defending Section 1 Class D champion Haldane in a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.

"We have a good group of returning players who either started or were there as part of a championship team," second-year coach Jim Moran said earlier in summer camp. "There are always expectations when you win. We think we can be very good."

The returning Eagles who will lead the way this season include power running back and linebacker Tim Soave, defensive lineman and running back Brian Gardner and quarterback Grant Giglio, who has good size and an accurate arm.

Junior linebacker Matt Bohl and freshman lineman Kyle Coache will help Gardner and Soave on defense, but the Eagles will still be tough to stop on offense.

Haldane, like Dobbs Ferry, lost several seniors stars and has had trouble moving the ball in early scrimmages. Halfback Will Moss seems to be the main offensive threat.

The Eagles home field at Gould Park has been resurfaced and leveled on the west end and the home crowd is always a big advantage.

Bronxville went 11-1 last season on its way to a state title, losing by a single point, 15-14, to then defending Class C state champion Bronxville on opening day. Expect the Eagles to win this opener.
