WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Dobbs Ferry High School runners Sarah King and Shanna Yue seemed to be having fun Friday running an event that would present an imposing challenge to most athletes, as the teammates took on the 2,000-meter steeplechase at the Section 1 State Qualifying Meet at Loucks Field on the campus of White Plains High School.
King met the qualifying time, taking the course in 7:37, and will compete at next week's New York State Public Schools Meet in Syracuse, and Yue will have the memory of her last high school steeplechase to cherish. King has clocked a personal record time of 7:27.
"This is only the second time I've run the steeplechase," Yue said. "I'm going off to college (Bowdoin) next fall and will run middle distances, so this was a fun meet to compete in. I just wanted to go out and give it my best."
King, who was thankful to be able to conquer the gusty winds, the steeple jumps and the clock to make her first state meet, is also in her senior season. She will attend Vassar College in the fall.
"Running here with Shanna was fun for me, and making the state meet is great," King said. "There's some pressure because you have to get a good time, but this is a fun event once you get over the challenge of the jumps. We usually have water, and that can be fun, too."
