Hastings Almanac: Recreation Department

The Hastings-on-Hudson Recreation Dept offers programs for all age groups. In the fall/winter months the sports program offers youth football, soccer, basketball, bowling, skating and ski trips. Spring and summer classes and activities include baseball, softball swimming, tennis instruction, volleyball, exercise workshops, arts and crafts, special events in the parks, bus trips and a variety of playground activities. There is a summer camp for preschool children and a six-week day camp for those in elementary school. Both are held at Hillside School.

Chemka Pool is the site for a number of swimming programs, including free instruction for children in grades Kindergarten through sixth, lifeguard training and a fitness and senior citizen swims. The swim team, which competes in meets during July and August, is open to pool permit holders ages 7 to 18 years. Recreational swimming is available to those with season memberships, open to town and school district residents.

Recreational tennis is offered at Hillside Park and Reynolds Field for those with annual permits. During the summer the Recreation Department sponsors a women's tennis team as well as village-wide tennis tournaments. James Harmon Community Center houses the Senior Canteen and an after-school activity room, and is used for most indoor programs and activities. The department's parks offer a variety of features, including picnic areas, playgrounds, tennis courts and sports fields (baseball, football, basketball, track). Hillside Park houses a swimming pools and bathhouse complex, ice skating pond and facilities for fishing. Adjacent Hillside Woods offers hiking trails and a vernal pond. Two parks, Senior Citizens Vest Pocket Park, and Wagner Park, are designed for senior citizens and provide passive recreation.
