Hastings Field Hockey All Tied up With Scarsdale

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y – Hastings field hockey coach Robert McCann implored his Yellow Jackets to get back on defense as time ran out on Monday’s scoreless tie between his girls and visiting Scarsdale.

“We play well on defense, but we need to make better moves in the offensive zone,” said McCann. “This is a young group and they have ability. I want them not to just push the ball forward 10 yards at a time and then stop, but to be aggressive with the ball and not be afraid to take a shot.”

Kaitlyn Suydam said she and her teammates know their offense has lagged behind their defense in the first two games of the season.

“Scarsdale is a pretty good team and we did okay on defense,” Suydam said. “We have to make better passes and finish plays. We get the ball in the offensive zone but we have to look to shoot the ball when we have the chances.”

Stephanie Piko, who was up and down the field with Suydam trying to press the offense, said the Jackets lack of success last season had to be reversed by the group of team leaders who included Piko, Naomi Martel, Brittany Pacheco and Barbie Nibur.

“We have to be more aggressive as a team and think about making plays on offense,” Piko said. “Defense is easier to deal with because we can react to the other team. But on offense, we have to make things happen.”

Hastings looks for its first win of the season at Sleepy Hollow Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
