Hastings Field Hockey Coach Plays Former Player

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- Hastings varsity field hockey coach Bob McCann saw a familiar face whenever he looked down at the Sleepy Hollow sideline Tuesday.

First-year Sleepy Hollow varsity field hockey coach Alex Griffin played two years for McCann at Hastings - from 2001 to 2002 - before going on to a four-year college career.

“It is very nice to see and it makes me feel honored that Alex enjoyed playing field hockey when she did and is now coaching it,” McCann said.

The teams traded goals and played to a 1-1 tie, but for McCann, the experience was memorable. McCann said former teammate Katie Frey was sitting on the Hastings bench during the game wearing a Hastings field hockey shirt.

“The three of us had a homecoming,” McCann said. “Coaching against a former player is tough because you want your girls and team to succeed, but you also want Alex’s team to do well. I am proud of Alex. She is doing a great job and working hard with her team.”
