Hastings Hosts John Costello Holiday Tournament

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – John Costello is synonymous with Hastings High School basketball and the legendary basketball coach will be honored once again this week when the school hosts its annual John Costello Holiday Basketball Tournament.

The tournament will include girls’ team from Rye Neck, Blind Brook and Edgemont, while the Yellow Jackets boys will host teams from Haldane, Greenburgh Academy and Lab-Museum (Yonkers).

“We’re happy to have Haldane, Greenburgh and Lab-Museum, a New York City team, in the boys’ tournament,” said Ezra Elliot, Hastings’ first-year head coach. “The tournament is always a great event. It’s a little earlier than it’s been in the past. We’re hoping to get good crowds.”

John Costello, a longtime teacher and coach, started the Holiday Tournament in 1963 and ran it successfully until his retirement in 1991.  During his tenure, Costello was Section 1 Coach of the Year in 1969 and 1987. He compiled a career record of 457-255, winning four Sectional 1 titles in 1969, 1975, 1980 and 1987. Costello was inducted into the Westchester Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Hastings Hall of Fame in 2002.

The Irvington boys defeated Hastings in last year’s final and the Edgemont girls topped the Hastings girls for the title in 2010.
