Hastings Spikes Croton in Volleyball Opener

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y – The Hastings High School volleyball team has struggled to win over the past two years, but things may be turning around if Thursday's 3-1 sets victory over Croton-Harmon in the season opener is any indication.

"The girls played very well today," Hastings coach Melissa Otivich said. "All around great effort. We lost to them last year in sectionals. In my nine years at Hastings, this is the first time we beat Croton."

The Yellow Jackets took a convincing 25-16 opening set victory and the second nip-and-tuck set 27-26 before Croton recovered an took the third set 26-24. Hastings then closed out the match with a 25-22 fourth-set win.

Emma Sweeting led the way at net with 19 kills followed by Erica Freed with 10 kills. Jasmine Padilla provided the playmaking with 18 assists over the four-set match. Mary Dailey added two kills and four assists. Otivich enjoyed the win and quickly looked forward to the Jackets' next challenge.

"Ardsley has a great program and are always tough competitors who are well coached," Otivich said. "We are looking forward to the challenge."
