Hastings Volleyball Toppled in Regional Semifinal

The historic run of the Hastings volleyball team ended Thursday when the Yellow Jackets fell to upstate Trumansburg Dickerson High School 3-0 in the New York State Regional semifinals at Elmira High School.

Hastings (13-7) earned the right to play in the regional by winning the school’s first Section 1 Class C volleyball championship over Rye Neck last Saturday. Trumansburg (20-1), the Section 4 representative, advanced the regional final.

Trumansburg won the first set of the match 25-15, but the Yellow Jackets recovered to make the second a close one, losing 25-21. Trumansburg won a convincing 25-6 final set to eliminate Hastings.

Erica Freed had seven kills and Yellow Jackets co-captain Emma Sweeting had four to lead Hastings in the match.

Sweeting said Tuesday that the unexpected and unprecedented Section 1 championship was the result of teamwork and good chemistry and good timing.

“To be able to win a championship for the school in our senior year after struggling the last three years is great,” Sweeting said. “I couldn’t ask for more. We really enjoyed playing together this year, working together and winning a sectional championship.”
