IRVINGTON, N.Y. The Irvington High School football team will face league opponent Westlake in the Wildcats homecoming game Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Neither team is likely to make the playoffs, but a win coupled with some outside help would be necessary for either squad to have a shot at the postseason.
Irvington is 2-4 and is sixth out of 12 teams in Class B with 0.6 points in the Piner standings, which Section 1 uses to determine playoff teams. The Bulldogs started off 0-3 but turned their season around by winning two of their last three games.
Irvington has averaged 26.17 points per game on offense and has given up 29 points per game.
After a 2-2 start, Westlake has trended downward with two straight losses. The Wildcats are ninth in the Class B Piner standings with -0.23 points. Westlake is coming off a 28-14 loss to Croton-Harmon and an emotional 17-14 loss to Nanuet the previous week.
The Wildcats have been inconsistent all season, averaging 13.25 points per game in their four losses and 45 points per game in their two wins. For Westlake, it has been feast or famine. It needs to score a ton of points to come out on top.
Saturdays game will likely come down to which team makes fewer mistakes. Both have shown flashes of greatness but have been too inconsistent to sustain a run at the playoffs.
