Ovetsky, 18, is the highest scorer in IHS varsity history with 81 career goals, and he was also a team captain.

Varsity coach Patrick DiBenedetto said he is thrilled and proud of Ovetsky.

“Ben devotes a lot of time to this sport and it shows,” DiBenedetto said. “As his coach for the last four years, I have seen him mature as an individual and an athlete. His technical skills, dedication, and leadership were demonstrated daily on the field. Ben is a role model for current and future athletes at Irvington to aspire to be like."

Ovetsky, who has been playing soccer since he was 5, said it was always a goal of his to play on a Division I team. However, these opportunities rarely come to an athlete from a school of Irvington’s size.

“Ben is a great kid – cheerful and optimistic who always had a smile for me in the morning," recently retired Irvington principal Scott Mosenthal added. "I can only recall a handful of Irvington athletes in the past 40 years who have gone to play Division I athletics.”

Mosenthal added that Ovetsky is one of only two athletes in the area who will play soccer at the Division I level as freshmen next school year.

“We are thrilled for you, Ben,” Irvington superintendent Kristopher Harrison added in the statement. “Having attended games, both this year and last, and having been a soccer player myself, it doesn’t take much to see your talent and dedication."
