Irvington's Gallagher is Tri-Winner in Swim Meet

RYE, N.Y. -- Megan Gallagher did not know what to expect as she prepared for the final of the 17-and-under girls’ 200-yard individual medley Thursday. The 14-year-old sophomore-to-be at Irvington High School would be racing for the first time against older girls. When the race finished, Gallagher, swimming for the Ardsley Swim team, proved she belonged with the big girls.

Gallagher won the 200 IM and later took the 14-and-under girls’ 100-yard freestyle at the 86th annual Westchester County Swimming Championships at Playland Pool. Gallagher capped her night by receiving the high-point award (30 points) in the 14-and-under girls’ division.

Bebe Thompson, of the Scarsdale Municipal Pool, was second with 28 points. “I was really nervous going into the race because I was the youngest person in it,” Gallagher said. “I was scared that I was not going to place good, but I am happy with the outcome.”

Her time of two minutes 16.94 seconds was a full three seconds better than runner-up Katie Duncalf (2:20.08) of the Chappaqua Swim & Tennis Team. “I didn’t really relax until the end of the race,” said Gallagher with a smile. “I knew I had to go out really strong and I felt I did. I felt my fly was pretty good. I went at it hard and that set me up for the end of the race.”

Gallagher added her second title of the night swimming the 100 free in 55.65 seconds. “I am really proud of myself and excited winning two events in one day, especially the 17-and-under IM being only 14.”
