Kids Flock to Baseball Competition in Dobbs Ferry

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Local children from ages 7 to 14 gathered at Gould Park on Sunday afternoon to test their baseball skills at the Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run competition .

“It’s a fun little thing,” said Matt Arone, the superintendent of the Dobbs Ferry Recreation Department.  “They have to pitch from a certain distance and hit the target.  They get six balls to hit the target.  Then we put the batting tee out and they have to hit it as far and as straight as they can.  Then we just time you to see how fast you are.”

The kids were split up into several age groups as Arone, who also is the Dobbs Ferry High School baseball coach, and others recorded their results on the field.  Arone said the event has been a tradition in the village for a long time.

“The village recreation department has been sponsoring this for at least 10 years if not longer, maybe 15,” he said.

Tom Sellitti and his two sons were down at the park on Sunday to test their skills while having a little fun as well.

“He seemed to be having fun so that’s all that matters, I think it’s good all these kids like baseball so much,” he said.  “It also gives them something to practice on an individual level, but I think it’s a good opportunity to see if what you teach them sticks with them.”

With baseball season in full swing and the weather starting to warm up, Arone said now is a great time for an event like this.

“Obviously it's spring time and it's baseball and softball time, so we want people to be thinking about the Mets and Yankees and everything else,” he said.  “Baseball is America’s sport and it's springtime so we want to get them out there.”
