McGowan dominates as Hastings blanks Pawling

Hastings’ lefty Andrew McGowan was king of the hill for seven innings yesterday, striking out 15 Pawling batters while allowing just one hit en route to dominating 4-0 victory as the host Yellow Jackets advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Section 1 Class B baseball tournament.

"A good fastball and I threw some decent breaking balls," McGowan said. "We're happy to get past the first round (Hastings lost its first-round game of the Section 1 tournament last season). "We have to get right back (today) and play another game."

McGowan used a blistering fastball and an array of off-speed curves and change-ups, sending Pawling batters back to the dugout shaking their heads.

Third-seeded Hastings will host No. 6 Irvington in today’s 4:30 p.m. quarterfinal. Irvington topped No. 11 Pleasantville 1-0 in a first-round game yesterday.

While McGowan took care of the defense, his teammates produced enough offense to take an early lead that held up despite a good pitching performance by Pawling righty Scott Riebling.

Jake Fuerst had two RBI and Brandon King had a double and an RBI for the Jackets. Matthew Adipietro had two hits for Hastings.
