Hastings lefty Andrew McGowan was king of the hill for seven innings yesterday, striking out 15 Pawling batters while allowing just one hit en route to dominating 4-0 victory as the host Yellow Jackets advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Section 1 Class B baseball tournament.
"A good fastball and I threw some decent breaking balls," McGowan said. "We're happy to get past the first round (Hastings lost its first-round game of the Section 1 tournament last season). "We have to get right back (today) and play another game."
McGowan used a blistering fastball and an array of off-speed curves and change-ups, sending Pawling batters back to the dugout shaking their heads.
Third-seeded Hastings will host No. 6 Irvington in todays 4:30 p.m. quarterfinal. Irvington topped No. 11 Pleasantville 1-0 in a first-round game yesterday.
While McGowan took care of the defense, his teammates produced enough offense to take an early lead that held up despite a good pitching performance by Pawling righty Scott Riebling.
Jake Fuerst had two RBI and Brandon King had a double and an RBI for the Jackets. Matthew Adipietro had two hits for Hastings.
