Mercy's Papas Named Soccer Player of the Week

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- Nick Papas has made an impact in his first season as the starting goalie of the Mercy College men’s soccer team. Papas has been instrumental in the Mavericks’ 4-1-1 start. Mercy learned Wednesday that it was ranked ninth in the East region of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America rankings.

Papas, a junior, was selected the East Coast Conference men’s soccer player of the week after backstopping the Mavericks to a trio of wins last week -- over Nyack, Felician and Bridgeport. The Mavericks won all three games by a score of 2-1, highlighted by the overtime victory over Bridgeport, which entered the game ranked 10th in the East Region. Papas made a combined 14 saves to earn the wins.

“I was not really expecting it,” said Papas, a Business major. “I was surprised. I feel I made the saves I needed to make and did everything I could to the best of my ability. I felt the whole team has been playing really well.”

Papas finished with eight saves against Bridgeport as William Koki scored the winner in overtime.

“Going in, we knew Bridgeport was going to be a tough opponent,” Papas said. “We executed offensively, defensively and in goal to come out on top. That was a great a win for the program.”
