Olympic Athlete From Mohegan Lake Gets Set To Compete In Rio Games

HUDSON VALLEY, N.Y. -- Five athletes with connections to the Hudson Valley will compete in the Summer Olympics at Rio de Janeiro, which start Friday, Aug. 5.

Among those to watch:

  • Melissa Gonzalez from Mohegan Lake, competing in field hockey. The former University of Connecticut field hockey star earned her pivotal spot on the National Team in 2010 and verified her importance at the 2011 Pan American Games by being a part of an outcome that made USA Field Hockey history. Gonzalez made her first Olympic Games appearance in London in 2012 and was a part of the 2014 Rabobank Hockey World Cup squad that impressed the world with a fourth place finish. She is a graduated of Lakeland High School. 
  • Ryan Carlyle from West Nyack, competing in rugby. Carlyle, who plays the hooker position, was born in Nyack and attended Clarkstown High School South. 
  • McLain Ward from Brewster, competing in equestrian. Ward, a married father of one, was born in Mount Kisco and is a three-time Olympian (2004, 2008, 2012) and two-time Olympic medalist (two golds). He trains at Castle Hill Farm in Brewster.
  • Daryl Homer, competing in fencing. Homer was born in the U.S. Virgin Islands and moved to New York with his mother and sister at age five. He began fencing at 11 after reading about it in the dictionary. Though he lives in the Bronx, he attended New Rochelle's Salesian High School. He competed in the 2015 Pan American Games and won gold along with his team, in London in 2012 and was the first U.S. men’s fencer to medal in saber at the senior world championships (2015).
  • Leonard Korir, track and field. Korir, born in Kenya but living in Colorado Springs, Colo., spent time competing in both cross-country, and track and field at Iona College in New Rochelle. He is an eight-time NCAA All-American.
