Westchester Player Gets Key Hit For Virginia In College World Series Win

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – Nate Irving of Yonkers smacked the key hit for the University of Virginia Tuesday as it beat Texas Christian University, 3-2, in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

Irving smashed a ground-rule double to lead off the bottom of the 15th for the Cavaliers. Pinch runner Thomas Woodruff scored the winning run from third base on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Pinero. The game matched the longest in the 66-year history of the CWS.

Irving had two hits for Virginia (51-14), which is now 2-0 in the World Series. Virginia beat Mississippi, 2-1, in its first game on Saturday.

Virginia plays on Friday in its bracket final of the double elimination tournament against the winner of a game Thursday between Ole Miss and TCU. Virginia needs one victory to secure a berth in the best-of-3 championship series.

Irving, a graduate of Riverdale High School, is hitting .242 with a home run and 17 RBIs for Virginia. He has started 47 games and played in 52. Earlier this month, Irving was selected in the 34th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Major League Baseball draft.

He was a third-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection and threw out 12-of-26 runners attempting to steal.
