Westchester Soccer Fans Poised For Usa-belgium World Cup Match

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- With television ratings for the 2014 World Cup going through the roof with the U.S. men's team still in the tournament, Westchester County fans will be following Tuesday's match with Belgium at local sports bars, restaurants, workplaces and at home.

Bartender Cat Lennon was serving customers at O'Connor's Public House on Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains just after lunch hour and the scene was set for soccer with USA bracelets and blue beads on the tables waiting for the fans to arrive for the 4 p.m. EST start. (The game will be shown live on ESPN.)

"We'll get a big crowd with the USA playing," Lennon said. "It's been very busy for the World Cup. We're ready for a fun afternoon."

The United States will meet Belgium in the Round of 16 with the winner going on to meet the winner of the Argentina-Switzerland game in th World Cup quarterfinals.

Alan O'Connor was headed for O'Connor's in mount Kisco where the Northern Westchester pub will also be featuring the game. O'Connor's also has pubs in Harrison and Brewster.

"It's been very exciting for sure," said O'Connor, who sported a USA jersey. "All the places will be busy today."

Shawn Petersen was passing through White Plains on his way to New York City for a soccer party at a downtown bar.

"All my friends work in Manhattan and will be getting out of work, so I'm meeting them there," Petersen said. "We need at least one more win for the U.S."
