Yellow Jackets Boys Trip Bronxville in Overtime

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Joe Tino made all six of his free throw tries in the overtime to lift the Hastings boys basketball team to 31-26 victory over visiting Bronxville Wednesday at Hastings High School.

“I felt confident out there on the line,” Tino said. “You have to make free throws. I think we played well defensively down low. Coach (Elliott) tells us that we can allow outside shots but to protect the paint. We did that pretty well.”

The Yellow Jackets (4-2) rebounded from Monday’s loss at Woodlands despite struggling to score throughout the game as Bronxville (1-2) used a pressing defense to limit Hastings’ ability to run.

Quran Robinson’s two three-pointers helped give the Yellows Jackets a 15-11 halftime lead as both teams struggled to score. Dillon Healy’s three-pointer stretched the lead to 18-14 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter and the Jackets finished the quarter up 20-16.

Robinson, who scored eight points, found his way back into the game in fourth-quarter crunch time and made a big layup to give the Jackets a 25-21 lead.

“We sometimes depend too much on looking for three-pointers, so I tried to be aggressive to the basket,” Robinson said. “I want to be unselfish and look for teammates, but when the lane is open, you have to go to the basket.”

Despite playing from behind for most of the game and missing several free throw chances, Bronxville hung close until co-captain Gibbs Lilly made three free throws in the final seconds of the game to send it into overtime tied at 25-25.

Dillon Healy led Hastings with 11 points and Tino added eight, including the six overtime game winners.
