I can't wait for the movie based on the reporting by Mr. Leamer: "Another Kennedy Victimized By A Woman". Tracing the history of Kennedy male - female relationships including Marilyn's tormenting Jack, Mary Jo turning a routine traffic mishap into a homicide, and Bobby Jr.'s several TKOs at the hands of Mary, will open the eyes of the world to this remarkable phenomena. Village Manager Zegarelli is 1,000 per cent correct on the Village's response to these criminal actions. Anything less will send a message to other youths that their fun can include destruction of property without any real consequences. View Comment
As my mom use to say, "If you had wheels, you would've been a bicycle." It's unfortunate that even an action which appears to have universal support among the Briarcliff Schools community can't be acted on by the Board of Education without finger pointing and blame gaming by Trustee Maglietta. It is virtually black letter law in the public education finance community that infrastructure and capital improvement items which will have long term useful lives should be financed through a bond so that the future beneficiaries of these improvements pay for same over time in the future, and that today's taxpayers not be burdened immediately with these significant costs (if the $10.5 million was entirely paid for in next year's budget, it would consume about 22% of revenues). Since there are transaction costs each time a school district issues a bond, it makes sense to bundle several infrastructure and capital items in one bond, thereby providing management and cost efficiencies. If Trustee Maglietta in the past knew the needs covered by this bond, shouldn't he have proposed action item by item, year by year, bond by bond, according to his criticism of the School Board? Can someone explain to me why it would make sense for the Board not to act to reduce the sky high tax rates we experienced in 2008, far greater than any other community in the county? Would the school community and the Briarcliff community at large really have been better by continuation of the out of control spending habits of the prior Board and school administration? Let the parade of insensitive louts begin. The Clock Tower seems to be a fitting memorial to Mr. Henry's time at Pace where he apparently made an impact on the lives of many people, and will continue to do so for years to come. I don't see anything about the action by Pace or in this story to suggest that the Clock Tower memorial takes one side or the other on the tragic events which occurred at the Thornwood Shopping Center. Pace should be congratulated for the courage to prominently display the memorial to Mr. Henry. And compliments to Robert Michelin for his reporting on this matter. View Comment
When will we get to some integrity in discussion of proposed and adopted school budgets in Briarcliff and stop the chicanery of mixing apples and oranges? Critics of the good work of the majority of the Briarcliff School Board constantly flip flop on comparing adopted budget to adopted budget and actual expenditures to actual expenditures, and inappropriately mix the two items together. Take a look at the graph presented above and do the math on the $52.8 million dollar budget of three years ago, vigorously defended at the time by a certain clique which includes failed school board candidates like the above commentator, and the Superintendent's proposed $47.8 million dollar budget for next year, that's what you really need to know. As far as I can tell, the right sizing of the Briarcliff Schools budget has been accomplished without any degradation of the "Briarcliff Standard of Education". So, lets put the nonsense behind us and focus on the Superintendent's presentation and have a rational discussion of what changes may be warranted. View Comment
Kudos to The Daily Briarcliff for using a real picture of the event in question (I think) rather than what your daily competitor published in using an ambiguous stock photo. View Comment
There is something seriously wrong in the Briarcliff School District if in fact about 10 percent of its workforce has been performing functions contrary to the State Education Law! I'm certain the illicit activities done by the Teacher Aides didn't start with the tenure of Superintendent Miller and occurred while Dr. Fran Wills was in charge. At the very least, the Teacher Aides are today doing the same work as they have performed during the time the majority of the current School Board members have held office and while the newest Trustee served on the District Audit Committee. This while the School Board has consumed over the past couple of years significant financial resources, management time and engendered community uproar over the dirt in a few athletic fields. The School Board apparently did not know or ignored the fact that so many employees are acting in violation of the Education Law. The Briarcliff Board of Education needs to get its collective head out of the dirt and get refocused on the core educational program! Who knows what other stains may be sullying the education of our children! View Comment
This article would be more complete if it disclosed that both the teacher and the teaching aide unions are part of the NYS United Federation of Teachers (NYSUT) union. The teachers and the aides unions are represented by the identical NYSUT officials in dealings with the School District. While a certain number of teachers are likely motivated by personal concerns regarding the aides, it also true that the teachers have been "encouraged" by NYSUT to wear ribbons, black outfits, and go to Board meetings in solidarity with their fellow union members. Chip, you need to read the story more carefully. The trial date of January 6th has been cancelled, and the charges are still pending. Perhaps Mr. Maglietta had another important business commitment, many of which have cause him to be absent for all or part of Board meetings, and therefore the date had to postponed for another time.
