Hastings Farmers Market Plans to Bear Winter Weather

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Farmers markets aren’t typically known for being a place to go grocery shopping once the temperature drops, but the Hastings market looks to defy the status quo with its winter hours.

“It’s okay we’re pretty hardy people so we’re used to it,” said vendor Nancy Macnamara as she poured cups of hot cider for customers and fellow vendors.

Vendors prepare for the cold weather and are out in the Municipal Building parking lot rain or shine.  This weekend saw clear skies, but that didn’t help keep the temperatures any higher.

“The wind is sort of an issue, but usually we luck out weather-wise,” said vendor Sarah Simon.  “You just have to dress for it.”

Every vendor and customer was bundled up and prepared to get their business done while still flashing a smile to everyone who stopped by.

“No one is really surprised,” Simon said.  “You open your back door and you know what to expect.”

The Hastings Farmers Market will be both outside and inside throughout the winter, with some of its dates being held inside the community center.  Check the market’s website for an updated schedule of where vendors will be.

Regardless of the temperature, most vendors know what they’re getting into. “I was raised at a roadside food stand so I’m always ready for this,” Macnamara said.
