DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Dobbs Ferry, Hastings-on-Hudson and Ardsley governments, schools and public works departments are bracing for a powerful winter storm expected to begin Friday.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm and blizzard watch that may include heavy snow accumulations and hazardous conditions through Saturday

Dobbs Ferry Mayor Hartley Connett posted a weather advisory statement on the village website that offered information on snow removal, parking restrictions, sidewalk snow removal and other information for snow emergencies.

The village canceled its commuter bus for Friday and extended alternate-side-of-the-street parking through Monday and Tuesday for snow removal.

Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry and Hastings school districts had not yet decided on early dismissals for Friday afternoon, when the storm is expected to begin. Each district was expected to post notifications on school hours late Thursday or early Friday. Local schools will be notifying residents on early dismissal by 9 a.m. Friday if classes have not been already canceled.

Dobbs Ferry Schools Public Information Officer Elizabeth Hausman said the district would monitor the weather and make announcements via the district website.

Peter Capurso of Hastings Electric & Hardware said the store was experiencing the expected increase in sales of storm-related items prior to the snow.

"Of course, we never know what to expect, but we're selling sand, snow-melt products, all the usual things," Capurso said. "We'll be here Friday and Saturday."

Residents will also no doubt be heading to local supermarkets and other food retailers to stock up for the weekend.

"I'm sure Stop & Shop in Dobbs Ferry will be mobbed tonight," Dobbs Ferry's Cathy Criscuola said on the Rivertowns Daily Voice Facebook site.

Village officials in each of the Rivertowns communities advise residents to stay home during the storm to allow snow emergency and public works personnel to clear streets.
