The Hastings Library joined the New York Blood Center for its "Super Community Blood Drive" that partners with the XLVIII New York/New Jersey Super Bowl Host Committee for the first New York area Super Bowl to be played in February at Met Life Stadium.
"I give often [every 56 days], so I'm used to the process," said Pholpitue, who is a radiologist at nearby Dobbs Ferry Hospital. "I think giving blood is good for me. It helps others, so it does something good for me too. I give the blood and my body renews my supply."
Each person who donates blood as part of the campaign will be eligible for the sweepstakes for a pair of tickets to Super Bowl XLVIII. Blood donors also will receive a Super Community Blood Drive wristband.
And according to Hastings Librarian Susan Feir, who has helped coordinate blood drives and donates blood and platelets regularly, there's still time to give (Wednesday) or sign up for the next local blood drive.
"We really appreciate everyone who has donated," Feir said. "We would love to see many more people give blood because there is always a great need. Less than two or three percent of eligible donors actually donate. We encourage people to come by and see that it's easy ans satisfying."
Hastings Police Officer Heather Smolenski, who heads the local Police Benevolent Association's annual blood drive, was out supporting the blood drive.
"I know people have their reasons why they don't donate blood, but it is a simple way of helping people and helping your own family," Smolenski said. "We all kno0w someone who has needed blood at some point. This is a great way of doing some real good in the community."
Hastings resident Frank Broadhead relaxed and had some post-donation cookies and soft drinks after offering his pint of life.
"It's convenient and easy to to," Broadhead said. "I give blood twice a year here at the library. You get to lie down and rest and do something good for someone who may need blood. And the Lorne Doones [cookies] are good too."
Those who wish to donate blood may walk in at the Hastings Library until 6 p.m. Wednesday or inquire about donating at the New York Blood Center website.
