HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Wide-eyed, toddling children have a standing play date with loving senior citizens twice each Tuesday with Babies & Grands at the Andrus on Hudson Senior Community in Hastings-in-Hudson.
The tiny tots participate in sing-a-longs, interactive play and just plain fun kid's stuff under the care of Babies & Grands Program director Jenny Murphy at 9:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m.
"The program began last tear and we have a steady group of children and parents (and sitters) who attend," said Murphy, who is a Hastings resident. "You can see that the children really enjoy the activity. And the seniors are so wonderful, just being here with them."
Babies & Grands is a music and movement program for young children from six months through pre-school in which children learn the fundamentals of music through play, songs, instruments, and movement in the company of their caregivers and participating resident elders.
Murphy, who adds her guitar and singing voice to the play dates, has been working with children and children at heart for over 20 years in schools, camps, churches, performances, and special programs.
Hastings mother-daughter Susan and Sophie have been coming since the program began.
"Sophie (15 months) has been visiting since she was four months old," Susan said. "Our grandparents are in Florida, so we come here to bring some love to the seniors here. And Sophie, who is shy, loves coming."
Catherine O'Sullivan, a former New York city residents now living at Andrus, said she tries not to miss a session of Babies & Grands.
"I think the children have the most fun," O'Sullivan said with a big smile. "But we love it when they come. We sing along and it's like they are our own. I have a little trouble hearing, but I hear all the wonderful sounds the children make."
