The Irvington Police Department in conjunction with Westchester County, Greenburgh, Tarrytown, Dobbs Ferry, Ardsley, and Hastings police departments conducted a search and investigation into the report that was received around 12:40 a.m., police said.

After a comprehensive search, the man was apprehended without further incident near the New York State Thruway exit to Route 9A in Ardsley. The weapon was recovered in a wooded area off Cyrus Field Road in Irvington, police said.

The road was closed at Northfield Avenue, reopened at 8:30 a.m. and closed again a few minutes later. It was reopened for good around 9:40 a.m.

Irvington schools were originally closed for two hours around 6 a.m. this morning, but school district officials made a decision to close for the day as a safety precaution.

Parents were notified through voice messages, emails and text messages, and on the district's website and Facebook page.

An investigation is ongoing and Irvington police have not announced if any crimes were committed or charges are forthcoming.
