Details Emerge Of Arrest In Somers Child Sex Case

SOMERS, N.Y. -- The Western Connecticut State University professor who was arrested on Monday, Oct. 28, in connection with having sexual contact with a 15-year-old Somers boy, was arrested in White Plains, where he was attempting to meet with an "adult male interested in another encounter," state police told LoHud on Thursday, according to a report.

According to the original New York State Police report, Paul Hines, 73, of Danbury, was accused of communicating with a 15-year-old in Somers via the Internet and meeting with the child at the minor's residence and engaging in sexual contact.

When Hines showed up Monday at the undisclosed location in White Plains, "the man he was expecting turned out to be a Somers state police investigator, who arrested him," according to the LoHud report.

The arrest was made following an investigation that began on Oct. 14, "when the boy’s parents contacted (police) with their suspicions," according to the LoHud report. Police told LoHud that "Hines did not force himself on the boy; however, it became a crime because the boy is less than 17 and Hines is older than 21," according to the report.

The police investigated the incident in conjunction with the Westchester County District Attorney's Office. Hines was charged with third-degree criminal sexual act and endangering the welfare of a child, police said previously. He was arraigned in Somers and held at the Westchester County Jail with no bail.
