HASTINGSON-HUDSON, N.Y. Hastings Mayor Peter Swiderski has begun looking for volunteers for a committee that will assist the villages plans for the waterfront cleanup project.
There have already been a number of interested residents who have submitted resumes to the village so far, according to Village Clerk Susan Maggiotto.
We have 18 so thats quite a selection and theyre all very impressive resumes, she said. We live in a very talented community. Its going to be a good group. Theyre going to have a hard time choosing from that group.
Swiderski said the volunteer committee will be integral in the future plans for the waterfront in Hastings.
[British Petroleum] has asked the village to provide its engineers with our plans regarding the location of the infrastructure, parks and roads so that they can be included in the remedial design for the site, Swiderski said in a message to residents. To do so, we, as a village, need to come to some decisions over the next year as to where these will all go.
The deadline for interested residents to submit a resume to the committee is Feb. 17 and the board of trustees will decide on candidates in early March.
The mayors on an accelerated timeline for sure, Maggiotto said. He wants to get things done quickly so I think itll move ahead pretty fast.
The board of trustees will look to create a committee that will oversee public comments and come up with a detailed plan for infrastructure to provide to BP, which owns the waterfront land and will perform the cleanup once all is approved. The village must decide on a plan and provide this information to BP by late summer with enough details to give a guideline to engineers as to where sewer pipes, electrical lines, potential roads and water lines would go on the waterfront land. In his message, Swiderski said the main focus of the committee is to help create a site plan that includes streets, parks, an esplanade, and the locations where the public will access the water, as well as infrastructure.
The board will work to ensure that this first very practical step in planning the waterfront proceeds with as much public input as possible, Swiderski said in the message.
The board said residents with backgrounds in planning, real estate, architecture, law or parks and recreations are encouraged to apply.
Were also getting people who have more community experience in Hastings who have been active with the waterfront for a long time, Maggiotto said.
Once the committee is assembled by the board of trustees, the next step will be to hire a consultant for the project.
Part of the groups charge would be to review the applications for a consultant and recommend the hiring of one, Maggiotto said. I think you need to get the group first and then go from there.
