Throughout the day, the students practiced speaking French and Spanish, the two languages they will have the opportunity to study next year.
“The goal of the language fair was to provide our fifth-graders with a taste of both languages to help them make their decision,” middle school teacher Deanna Tessler said of the March 24 event. “It’s remarkable how much French and Spanish our students remember from the language fair when they come to us in September.”
As part of the day, the elementary students received passports to travel to six learning stations, where the sixth-graders helped them practice numbers, colors and days of the week in French and Spanish.
“At the French colors station, our sixth-graders taught the fifth-graders the colors in French before they played Twister,” Tessler said. “At the Spanish numbers station, the students learned a new song in Spanish before playing a ball game.” Tessler said the students enjoyed the language fair because it allowed them to learn something new while having fun. “I’m confident that the fair got them excited to begin studying a new language,” she said.
