Dobbs Ferry's Wortner Delivers Track Title

VALHALLA, N.Y. — Brendan Wortner was as fresh after his 3,000-meter victory Wednesday in the Section 1 Class C Track and Field Championships as he was on the first lap of the race at Valhalla High School.

"No pain, no gain, and I've put in the time and felt the pain, so these races are fun for me," Wortner said as he cooled down after his win. "This is my last high school season. I have the state qualifiers coming next week. And then off to college at SUNY-Geneseo, and I'll be running there."

Wortner, who has been a Class C champion in fall cross country as well as indoor track and now outdoor track, said running offers a challenge that requires individual commitment and self discipline.

"I've tried to push myself even when I may be out in front by a long distance," Wortner said after winning the 3,200 by nearly 200 yards. "Track is a sport where you gave to be disciplined. Coaches can push you some, but you have to be motivated. I think I have had that motivation."
