Elite Athletic Training Center To Open In Ardsley

ARDSLEY, N.Y. – Athletes in Ardsley, Westchester County and beyond will soon be able to train in a state-of-the-art facility under the guidance of world-class athlete coaches at the House of Sports, opening Monday.

“It’s an Olympic-style training facility,” said Donald Scherer, owner of House of Sports.

The 120,000-square-foot indoor facility at 1 Elm St. is one of the largest of its kind in the Northeast, Scherer said. It contains four basketball courts, four volleyball courts, a baseball/softball center, speed/agility center, restaurant, birthday party room, mixed martial arts fighting cage and adult fitness studio. The facility is open to children, teens and adults for a variety of uses, including training, team play and tournaments, Scherer said.

The House of Sports will also host basketball, baseball and lacrosse academies for youths aspiring to compete at the collegiate or professional levels, Scherer said.

Andy Borman, a former Division I coach at San Jose State University and member of the 2001 national champion Duke University basketball team, is the executive director of the basketball academy.

“Everything we do is skill-development based,” Borman said. “We’re not ever going to put kids in a situation where they can’t succeed. They’ll be playing the game the right way with the right skill set.”

The academy’s basketball shooting lab uses cutting-edge technology, with a computer system that monitors and tracks athletes' shooting skills and habits to help them improve, Scherer said. Borman said House of Sports focuses on teaching athletes in a positive environment, with a holistic approach that is based not only on skills, but performance and conditioning as well. Borman said the facility will stand out not only in Westchester County, but in the country and the world.

“As a D1 coach I’ve recruited from almost every gym in the country, and I’ve never seen something like this,” he said.

Ned Crotty, a Tewaaraton Trophy winner, former member of the Duke University lacrosse team and the 2010 World Lacrosse Championship U.S. team, is the executive director of the lacrosse academy.

“Here athletes will be able to work with the top players in the country,” Crotty said. “Westchester is a hotbed of talent.”

The facility will also feature an educational department to make sure student athletes succeed both on the field and in the classroom, Borman said.
