Irvington Winter Sports Update: Track Teams Crowned League Champions

IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- The girls and boys winter track teams were crowned league champions on Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Armory Track.

Eight athletes on the girls team captured league titles, with sophomore Zoe Maxwell leading the way, with three individual titles. On the boys side, five athletes took home titles, with Griffin Knapp earning two individual titles.

This is the first time in the history of the winter track program that the girls and boys teams have been crowned league champions in the same season. Scott Mosenthal is head coach and Chris Barry and Jim Buckley are assistant coaches.

The girls basketball team finished its regular season with a 19-1 record and took home its seventh consecutive league championship title -- its 20th of the last 40 years. Junior Lindsay Halpin reached the 1,000-point milestone during the Feb. 1 game against Hastings High School.

The team will likely be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Class B Sectionals, and is also expected to have a bye into the second round, which is scheduled for Feb. 20. Gina Maher is the head coach and Lisa Bucci, Barbara Constantine and Mike Toolan are the assistant coaches.

The boys basketball team concluded its regular season on Feb. 9 with a game against Briarcliff High School. The team is currently projected to be the No. 15 seed in the Class B Sectional tournament. The first round for the boys sectionals will be on Wednesday, Feb. 17.

The wrestling team will be competing in the Division II Section One Wrestling Championships over the weekend. The first rounds of the tournament will be held on Friday, Feb. 12, at Pearl River High School. Those advancing to the next rounds will head back to Pearl River on Feb. 13 at 9 a.m., with finals scheduled to begin at approximately 3 p.m. on the same day.

Brian Bernarducci is the head coach and Ben Karol is the assistant coach.
